San Francisco’s BART service completely halted by computer problem

San Francisco’s public transit service, BART, stopped running overnight, halting all train service.  Bay Area Rapid Transit said Saturday that crews working overnight on BART’s uninterruptible power supply ran into problems that have impacted the power supply system and train control routing system.  Without these systems, a BART statement says, it is unable to safely dispatch its trains for service.  The company also said it has multiple crews working to get both systems back up and running, but for now, bus agencies will be providing free trips for service between stations. BART’s ridership on weekdays averages more than 430,000 and it connects downtown San Francisco with the East Bay region cities of Oakland, Berkeley, Fremont and other communities. The transit system also provides trips to the San Francisco airport for about 4 million people annually.  Some regular BART riders who were trying to get to work Saturday vented their frustration about the outage, suggesting they would need to resort to ride share services such as Uber. The disturbance happened just after 6 p.m. EDT, according to a federal criminal complaint. About 40 minutes after boarding the flight to Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, authorities say Ian Robert James Morin began “yelling and acting erratically.” According to the complaint, the flight crew tried to calm Morin but he continued to shout and refuse to comply with their demands. Morin then allegedly hit a flight attendant in the throat with an open hand. The complaint said he tried to strike the attendant a second time, then threw up on the aircraft. Following the diversion and Morin’s removal and arrest, Delta put the flight’s other passengers up in hotels for the night and resumed the eight-hour flight to Paris Friday morning, Delta told The …
